Entering Velocity Dance Competition

  • REGIONAL EVENT’S:

    $30 (+GST) p/dancer registration solo/duo/trio

    $25 (+GST) p/solo

    $30 (+GST) p/duo/trio

    $35 (+GST) p/ACCELERATED DANCER

    $40 (+GST) p/troupe (dancers only performing in troupes pay a dancers fee of $17.5 + GST p/dancer)

    NATIONAL FINALS:

    $30 (+GST) p/dancer registration solo/duo/trio

    $50 (+GST) p/solo

    $55 (+GST) p/duo/trio

    $65 (+GST) p/ACCELERATED DANCER

    $69 (+GST) p/troupe (dancers only performing in troupes pay a dancers fee of $17.5 + GST p/dancer)

    Entry fees are required to be paid upon time of entry via the entry app, unless payment plans are organised. VDC does not provide refunds for change of mind following entry confirmation or non attendance of the registered event. The exception to this rule is if VDC can no longer accept an entry or has canceled event portions that affect the entry. Performers can request a refund in the case they cannot attend their registered event if a medical certificate is provided. In this case, performers will be provided a refund of their entry less processing fees and dancers registration fee.

    VDC reserves the right to refuse entry of a performer/performance.

    VDC is designed for dancers that are considered ‘amateurs’ or pre-professional, unless entering in our Professional Dancer’s divisions.

  • JAZZ:

    (also known as MODERN) – Routine is choreographed utilizing jazz technique and movement. This involves moves such as splits, kicks and isolations.

    TRADITIONAL CONTEMPORARY:

    A routine which combines both lyrical and modern movements. Routine must show balance and control, Traditional includes classically based, foundation training, inspired by artists such as Alvin Ailey. Please liase with your coaches on whether to enter this OR commercial contemporary for your routine.

    COMMERCIAL CONTEMPORARY:

    A routine which combines both lyrical and modern movements. Routine must show balance and control, commercial will also include innovative, cutting edge themes. Please liase with your coaches on whether to enter this OR traditional contemporary for your routine.

    LYRICAL:

    Routine is choreographed utilising lyrical technique and maintains the theme of the music in a slow, controlled movement that demonstrates a close connection to the musical piece. Dancers must display balance, flexibility and control.

    HIP HOP/COMMERCIAL:

    A dance which consists of the latest street or break dance style, as seen in current dance videos. With a strong influence of historical street styles and techniques being strongly encouraged.

    BROADWAY JAZZ/CABARET:

    Routine is theatrical in nature and is choreographed to music from broadway or a cinematic musical. Singing and/or lipsyncing is permitted, but not compulsory. Can be a routine choreographed off of cabaret technique also.

    TAP - ANY STYLE:

    Routine is choreographed utilizing traditional or contemporary techniques/steps and/or rhythm patterns. No tap sounds are permitted in the music to aide the dancer. Dancers must wear tap shoes. Any style or tempo is permitted.

    TAP - SPECIALTY:

    Same as TAP - ANY STYLE, dancers are invited to perform another styled tap routine of their choice in this divisions.

    CLASSICAL - ANY STYLE:
    Routine which must include classical steps and ballet technique. Variations are NOT permitted.

    SELF CHOREOGRAPHY:

    Must be produced by the student with no teacher assistance.

    OPEN:

    Can be another routine in the same genre already performed or to be performed. Cannot just do it in this section If we have the style available in other sections. Can be a routine we don't have a section for also. Please note this cannot be a repeat of another performance. Acro solos re permitted.

    FIRST GEAR:

    Dancers that are in their FIRST YEAR of performing at competitions only are permitted to enter this division. Open to al styles, routine can be repeated in this division.

    FAST TRACK:

    Commonly known as ‘judges choice’ at other events. Dancers will be provided a piece of music in which they must conceptualise a performance from choreography all the way through to hair and make up.

  • All dancers must enter in the below age divisions as per the dancers age at January 1st 2024.

    ULTRA MINI: 6yrs & under

    MINI: 7-8yrs

    PETITE: 9-10yrs

    JUNIOR: 11-12yrs

    INTERMEDIATE: 13-15yrs

    SENIOR: 16-20yrs

    TEACHER/PRO DANCER: 12yrs +

  • Troupe performances must enter with the average age of dancers at the above date for each routine. (To reach the average age of an entry, add all the ages together and divide by the number of dancers in the entry. When averaging ages always DROP THE DECIMAL POINT. For example, if a routine average is 12.7, you would drop the decimal, therefore the routine would compete in the junior division of 10-12yrs).

    Names and ages of all dancers must appear on the entry form or it will not be accepted (troupes only).

ACCELERATED DANCER, Qualification’s & Tour Nominations

  • The ACCELERATED DANCER division involves dancers taking part in an industry styled audition with a guest choreographer... select dancers are then chosen for the callback round in which they perform their chosen solo.

  • Dancers must score a GOLD AWARD for a routine in order for this to qualify for NATIONAL FINALS. Dancers allowed to enter ONE additional routine in National Finals on top of one/s qualified.

    STAR AWARD: 49 & under

    BRONZE AWARD: 50-59

    SILVER AWARD: 60-69

    GOLD AWARD: 70-79

    HIGH GOLD AWARD: 80-89

    PLATINUM GOLD: 90-94

    DOUBLE PLATINUM GOLD: 95+

    Dancers are marked on the following categories, all relevant to todays dance industry:

    CHOREOGRAPHY /20

    CREATIVITY /20

    EXECUTION /20

    STAGE PRESENCE /20

    OVERALL PERFORMANCE /20

  • At each of our regional tour locations, our judges and VDC directors will nominate 5 performances in the following categories:

    Most Memorable Solo’s

    Most Memorable Troupe’s

    Most Outstanding Choreography

    Directors Choice

    Out of the 5 dancers nominated, the highest score will be invited to perform at NATIONAL FINALS in the annual FINALS GALA with the other dancers from their category across the country.

General Entry Rules

  • All performers take part in VDC with full responsibility for their own health and safety. While extreme care is taken to provide safe spaces for dancers and their supporters, they take part in the event at their own will and are responsibly for any injury or ill event.

  • Solo/Duo/Trio performances must not exceed 3 minutes.

    Troupe performances must not exceed 3.5 minutes

    Please note performances are allowed a 5 second buffer to go over the provided time by… anything over this will result in point deduction.

  • It is of high importance to us that every performer has supporters of any kind when they attend VDC. We ask that all supporters and performers are polite to ALL performers attending VDC.

    Backstage areas and dressing rooms are to be kept clean and tidy with rubbish cleared when leaving the venue. Any excessive damage or unacceptable state the dressing room is left in may result in a charge to performers on behalf of the venue performed at.

  • At any one time Velocity Dance Competition may run their events by 45 minutes at most. We encourage performers to be at the venue in good time to ensure they do not miss their performance or be under unnecessary stress. The running of our event’s are continuously updated on the events app.

  • The outcome of each performance’s results and scores are fully in the decision of the judge/s of the event. If someone does not agree with the outcome of their results and scores, we invite performers or their supporters to kindly contact us following the event to open the discussion regarding this.

    All judges involved in VDC events follow a National Scoring System created by VDC to ensure this is as consistent as possible across the country.

  • Where possible, VDC will invite a photographer and/or videographer to events. Performers are encouraged to purchase/book these artists services, this is the responsibility of the performers to organise and book. However, supporters are welcome to video and photograph performers' routines with permission granted. It is prohibited to capture media of performers not associated with yourself or without permission granted.

  • General props are permitted. Ceiling heights vary in each venue. Please contact the VDC team if you are concerned with the size of a prop.

    No dangerous props (Examples: fire, swords, guns, sparklers, etc.)

    No use of live animals.

    Depending on the venue, VDC may not be able to store props during the 2023-2024 Regional Season.

    No use of water.
