The Samuels Public Library, under the leadership of its new Executive Director, Erin Rooney, has recently been endowed with a substantial $500,000 Mellon grant, earmarked to revolutionize its facilities and services over the next five years. This exciting development paves the way for significant enhancements to the library’s memory lab and the establishment of a cutting-edge maker space, offering community members unprecedented access to advanced technologies like 3D printers, laser cutters, and sewing machines.
Amidst growing demand for digitization of vintage media formats, such as 8mm film and vinyl records, the grant will bolster the library’s capacity to preserve these cherished analog memories. Rooney highlighted the urgency of digitizing at-risk formats to safeguard them from deterioration, thus ensuring their longevity for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
The introduction of a maker space within the library premises signifies a leap toward fostering creativity and innovation in the community. This initiative will facilitate personal and collaborative projects and encompass educational programs to enhance skill sets, ranging from crafts to technology.
A Taste for Books
In addition to technological advancements, the library is buzzing with anticipation for its annual fundraiser, “A Taste for Books.” Slated for April 27th, this year’s British Invasion theme promises an evening brimming with cultural enrichment. Attendees can look forward to exploring sections dedicated to British legends, lyrics, and literature, with decor and activities inspired by icons like The Beatles, Sherlock Holmes, and the magical world of Harry Potter.

The proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction featuring unique items and artwork will directly support the library’s ongoing and future programs, including the expansion of the memory lab and maker space projects.
The Mellon grant and upcoming “A Taste for Books” event underscore the Samuels Public Library’s commitment to preserving the past while embracing the future. By fostering a space for technological innovation and cultural appreciation, the library continues to be a cornerstone of community engagement and learning.

In a candid and enlightening interview at the Royal Examiner studios, Delegate Delores Oates, representative of Virginia’s 31st District, offered a glimpse into her political journey and the challenges and triumphs of serving in the Virginia State Legislature. With an air of humility and determination, Delores recounted the awe she felt walking into the historic State Capitol, a feeling that underscored the weight of her responsibilities.
Before her tenure as a delegate, she served a term on the Board of Supervisors—a role she embraced with vigor. Her decision to step into the legislative arena was a bold move that she navigated with grace and effectiveness.
Oates described the comprehensive and fast-paced orientation for new delegates, highlighting the transition from local governance to the state level’s complex legislative processes. She shed light on the collaborative and meticulous work behind drafting legislation, sharing her firsthand experience with a bill aimed at curbing youth vaping—an issue she identifies as a significant challenge in schools.
Her efforts to increase penalties for selling vapes to minors are a testament to her commitment to the well-being of her constituents and reflect her broader legislative agenda focused on health, education, and community development. Oates emphasized the importance of strategic thinking and patience in the legislative process, likening it to a game of chess rather than checkers.
Beyond her legislative endeavors, Oates is deeply committed to constituent service, working tirelessly to address their needs and concerns, from veterans’ affairs to education. She also expressed a genuine belief in fostering entrepreneurship and innovation among the youth, emphasizing the importance of exploring paths beyond traditional college education.
As Oates continues her service in the Virginia legislature, her dedication to the 31st District’s welfare and her strategic approach to governance signals a promising tenure. With a balanced blend of reverence for Virginia’s rich political heritage and a forward-looking vision, Delegate Delores Oates stands as a pillar of leadership and advocacy in the heart of Virginia politics.

In this Town Talk, Mike McCool shares an engaging conversation with Michelle Smeltzer, a key figure in community welfare and the director of numerous initiatives aimed at supporting those in need. Despite her many roles, Smeltzer humbly acknowledges the vast array of community projects she wishes she had the time to contribute to further. Highlighting the recently concluded HARTS (Hope and Rest Temporary Shelter) program’s success, Smeltzer celebrates the immense community support that fueled its 18-week operation, providing food and shelter to those in need every night.
The discussion transitions to the upcoming Empty Bowl Supper, an annual fundraiser to support the House of Hope, held this year at the Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department on April 11th from 5 to 7 p.m. This event, beloved by the community and long-standing to the point of its origins being somewhat of a mystery, not only serves as a major fundraiser but also as a symbol of the community’s collective effort to address local needs. With a lineup of local businesses contributing, from Oak & Ollie’s much-lauded sourdough bread to diverse soups from establishments like the Apple House and Red Light Culinary, the event promises a feast for a cause.
The Empty Bowl Supper, priced accessibly to encourage broad participation, supports the House of Hope. It is a crucial resource offering transitional housing and support services to men seeking to reestablish their independence and well-being. Smeltzer details the comprehensive support offered, from facilitating transportation needs to helping residents navigate legal and personal challenges, embodying the community’s commitment to lifting its members.
Further illustrating the community’s spirit of support, Smeltzer mentions Cars Changing Lives. This program exemplifies practical assistance by providing vehicles to those in need, enhancing their employment opportunities and overall mobility.
The conversation underscores the profound impact of community-driven initiatives like the Empty Bowl Supper on local welfare projects like the House of Hope. These efforts provide immediate aid and foster a sense of unity and mutual support, essential for building a resilient and caring community.

A new pastor is at the Rivermont Baptist Church at 575 Catlett Mountain Road in Front Royal. In a recent Town Talk, our publisher, Mike McCool, sat down with Justin and Hannah Dove to discuss their journey to Front Royal and their plans for the church’s future. Justin Dove, recounting a pivotal moment in his life following a severe accident on August 31, 2020, which led to a traumatic brain injury, shared how his faith and the support of his wife and medical team played a crucial role in his recovery and eventual path to Rivermont Baptist Church. Through a serendipitous conversation about his recovery and faith journey, Dove was introduced to the opportunity at Rivermont, where he now serves alongside his wife, Hannah.
The Doves officially took on their roles on November 5, 2023, and are eagerly looking forward to celebrating the church’s 70th anniversary with a series of events starting April 12th. The celebration promises to be a vibrant occasion, with special music, preaching, and community gatherings, highlighting the church’s longstanding impact on the community and its commitment to spiritual revival.
Justin Dove emphasized the importance of teamwork in their ministry, acknowledging his wife’s invaluable support and contributions. Their story of childhood sweethearts, having met in a private Christian school, adds a personal touch to their shared dedication to faith and community service.
Looking ahead, the Doves have a vision of revival for the church, encapsulating this year’s theme, “Wilt Thou Not Revive Us Again?” from Psalm 85:6. Their plans include soul-winning, visitation, and vacation Bible school, aiming to ignite a passion for faith within the community. The upcoming 70th-anniversary celebration is not just a reflection of the church’s history but a beacon of hope for its future, underpinned by the Doves’ leadership and the collective spirit of the Rivermont Baptist Church community.
As they prepare for the anniversary events and a summer filled with spiritual and community engagement, the Doves are warmly welcomed by the community, ready to embrace their new roles and contribute to the church’s legacy of faith, fellowship, and service.

A testament to resilience and community spirit unfolded in Warren County as first responders tackled an unprecedented challenge. Amidst the backdrop of a severe red flag day on March 20th, signaling high fire risk due to weather conditions, local heroes from Warren County Fire and Rescue and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office found themselves stretched thin. Facing several fires within their county and many more in surrounding areas like Shenandoah County, these dedicated individuals were pushed to their limits.
Camden Whitacre, a lieutenant at Warren County Fire and Rescue, detailed the sheer scale of the emergency. Fires engulfed various parts of the county and necessitated structural protection, wildland firefighting, and routine EMS calls. Mutual aid, a lifeline for stretched resources, became scarce as neighboring counties battled the flames.
The situation highlighted the vulnerability and camaraderie amongst the first responder community. Charles Brogan, a Warren County Sheriff’s Office captain, and Michael Robinson, a patrol sergeant, shared insights into the day that tested their limits. From evacuating neighborhoods to managing an overwhelming number of calls, they and their teams embodied the spirit of service and sacrifice.
The emergency underscored the critical role of technology and community support in crisis management. Smart911 allowed efficient communication and aid distribution, showcasing a silver lining in the form of technological advancements that helped emergency response efforts.
As the dust settled, the community’s unwavering spirit and its first responders’ relentless dedication shone brightly. Their story is a vivid reminder of the strength found in unity, the resilience of those who serve, and the importance of preparedness in the face of unforeseen challenges. It’s a narrative of how, even in the darkest times, the light of community, cooperation, and courage can guide us through.
